What You’ll Learn In Complete Drawing (for Beginners)?
- In Module 1 Part 1 I demystify materials: Paper types and weights, erasers, sharpeners, different types and grades of pencil and associated materials. Then in Part 2 I teach you about tonal contrast and show you how to make a tonal scale, and tone isolator.
- In Module 2 Part 1 we look at scaling by eye, proportionally scaling up photos and working out where to place things, and what shape they are. In Part 2 I cover mechanical scaling methods like grids, tracing paper and scale dividers, covering the pros and cons of each.
- In Module 3 Part 1 you will start covering real subjects, beginning with still life basics, including ellipses, angles and more. In Part 2 we look at buildings; because there’s a strong relationship between a box on a table and a house on a street! Learn how to always get the angles right.
- In Module 4 Part 1 I start to teach botanical elements, flowers and leaves as you learn how to face a flower in any direction, Part 2 goes bigger with trees and gardens as you learn to draw a tree at any distance, and make your garden pathway lay flat.
- In Module 5 Part 1 we look at landscapes, in particular horizon placement, making elements lay flat and using repeating motifs to gain perspective illusion. Part 2 looks at the challenge of seascapes, some mistakes to avoid, and how to balance a coastal composition.
- In Module 6 Part 1 you will learn how to draw faces, placing the figures with the aid of curved guidelines and navigating any turn or tip of the head, with clever tips for features. In Part 2 figures are studied, proportions, foreshortening, figures close, moving, twisted or at distance.
- In Module 7 Part 1 looks at animals, getting the shapes right, faces and more, part 2 is all about birds, including tricky beaks and eye placement.
- In Module 8 it’s all about transport. Part 1 is cars and trains, as we use basic box shapes and adjust them to get proportion and perspective. Part 2 is planes and boats as we view things from above or below, using simple shapes to get everything looking realistic.
- In Module 9 we deep dive into a couple of tricky details: Part 1 gives you strategies for placing text, something that’s often part of drawing, from road signs to pickle jars. Part 2 looks at drawing hands using the ‘envelope’ technique to simplify shapes.
- In Module 10 we continue to study detail, Part 1 covers texture in depth from smooth to rough and Part 2 looks at things that grow; grass, hair, fur and how to make them realistic.
