Interior Design 101 Information
Dreaming, planning and choosing the interior design, finishes and items in your home – it is one of the fantastic highlights of any renovation or new build.
And yet, it can also be a minefield of options, confusion and overwhelm.
Whether renovating or building new, if you’re like most homeowners, you’ll have a Pinterest board full of inspiration for your future home.
And you’ll have ideas (SO.MANY.IDEAS!) about the styles you prefer, and the types of finishes and furnishings you want around you in your future finished home.
But – with the mountain of options available – do you know what will really deliver durability, timeless design, functionality AND affordability for your home’s interior?
“Interior Design 101” was created because …
The industry of Interior Design is an unregulated one, and if you’re seeking professional help, you’ll save money and drama by knowing how to find the right designer for you
Your interior design choices need to perform at so many different levels: functionality, durability, aesthetics, personal taste … and this can paralyse so many homeowners in making confident choices
And as you start to research, chances are you’ll be overwhelmed by ALL.THE.OPTIONS, and fear committing to your decisions. Which can mean you experience project delays, cost overruns, or lose the chance to have the things you DO want.
What You’ll Learn In Interior Design 101?
IN WEEK 1, YOU’LL GET ACCESS TO …
MODULE: INTERIOR DESIGNER
The Interior Design industry is actually an unregulated one, and with so many different titles (Interior Architect, Interior Designer, Interior Decorator, Interior Stylist), it can be challenging to know who to turn to.
This module will help you with what an Interior Designer can do, and why you might want to hire one. And it will also dispel some top myths, as well as help you avoid some common mistakes when it comes to choosing and working with an Interior Designer, and your Interior Design. Plus loads more!
AND THEN IN WEEK 2, YOU’LL GET ACCESS TO THE REMAINING MODULES IN THE COURSE, WHICH ARE …
MODULE: FLOOR
Knowing where to start with your Interior Design choices can be critical in getting it right. And many miss that the best place to start is … your floor.
It will be the biggest surface in your home. It has to perform. You’ll learn about the different flooring types, how to choose for durability and look, and what to avoid altogether. From timber to tile to carpet (and coming soon: concrete, marmoluem and epoxy), we also share selection and ordering tips, and how to save $$$ too.
MODULE: KITCHEN
The kitchen is often the hero of any home, and a big investment in your budget. And stuffing it up can mean daily frustration and regret.
With all the components, colours and materials, there’s a lot to know to make your choices confidently. You’ll learn about joinery, benchtops, splashbacks, fixtures, handles, hardware and appliances. AND you’ll also access tips on key dimensions and layout so your kitchen not only looks great – it works well too!
MODULE: BATHROOM
Bathrooms, ensuites and powder rooms – expensive areas that involve a lot of choices and details to get right. And these can all be quite permanent choices too.
There’s many cross-overs with our kitchen areas, and so we dive into how ‘linked’ these spaces need to be. We also cover the specifics on choosing your fixtures, your tiles, and whether that free-standing bath is the best choice for you. And there’s layout help with specific tips and dimensions to use. (And once you have a handle on kitchens + bathrooms, you’ll have the info you need for laundries too!)
MODULE: LIGHT + POWER
Far too often, homeowners forget about lighting and power during the design-phase of their project, and end up in a flurry on site (with an electrician) making desperate, panicked choices that cost more than they allowed.
Lighting (and power) provide functionality and convenience in any home. And lighting can do wonders for creating mood and really elevating the experience of your interiors. Learn what to consider, when and how to start designing and choosing, and the mistakes you need to avoid.
MODULE: DESIGN DIRECTION
Creating your Interior Design vision can be exciting and a little overwhelming. Learn how to do this with clarity by understanding more about colour, its impact, and how to create interior schemes that work.
This module will help with setting your Interior Design vision, creating timeless design, understanding colour and its impact, and what to do with ‘trends’ and ‘styles’. You’ll have the tools and knowledge to choose interior fixtures, finishes and furnishings that suit your needs, and that truly reflect you and your family.
MODULE: WALL
You’ll spend all this time, energy and money deciding on the finishes, fixtures, colours and textures for your home’s interior. But there’s some key final decisions to make so the whole picture comes together as a cohesive, durable and fantastic result.
This module features information on paint products and window furnishings. Get these sorted early so you can access the choices you want.
