Breaking into user research: A 59-minute video course, during which I’ll show you how I broke into the field and how you can do it too. I will give you the tools to break down the wall and escape the paradox of experience. As a researcher myself and especially as a hiring manager at the world’s top companies, there are things I (and my colleagues in many other organizations) look for when I hire junior researchers. I’ll introduce you to three breaking approaches: Getting educated, gaining experience, and identifying opportunities.

I will discuss ten characteristics of great user researchers and wrap up with answers to the top 12 questions frequently asked by people aspiring to become researchers. I’ll even share the names of the 12 researchers I follow because everything they publish –books, articles, posts, videos, tweets — is pure gold.

The rainbow spreadsheet template: The Rainbow Spreadsheet, which takes its name from the different colors used to represent the study’s participants, is a Google spreadsheet template with which all of the data collected during a UX research study is centrally and simultaneously documented by a team of people. It serves as the centerpiece for lessons learned from a study and later turns into the final report.

Research participant screener template: After spending years trying every hack to overcome the difficulties of finding participants for research and closely watching professional participant recruiters I worked with closely at Google for seven years, I have figured out that when it comes to finding participants for research, organization is critical! And that’s why I created and perfected a template intending to find the right participants easily. With this template, you’ll make every step count toward a successful research project.
